2026 in Review

This year I've made more sales than ever before, with most of them to appear over the next two years! Here are the two original pieces eligible for award consideration, and reprints of three stories you may have missed the first time around.

Son of the Sea (Sci-Fi, 2697 words)

A black-and-white photograph of the silhouette of a pregnant person standing against a bright, cloudy sky, looking down and gently cradling their stomach. (opens in new tab)

I'm proud of this story for many reasons, among them that it's the first time I've published a piece in the same universe as a prior story (with this being a prequel to my first published story, "In the Teeth of the Gale"). It's my first appearance in Gavagai, and was generously received by the readership.

Pomegranates for Kangaroos (Sci-Fi, 3482 words)

Cover of Utopia Science Fiction Magazine, Volume VII June, 2026, featuring an illustration of an astronaut looking out from behind a plant stem where an orange caterpillar crawls. (opens in new tab)

Nothing is ever discarded in my country of birth. When something breaks down, parts get replaced, damage is repaired, and a useful life is extended again and again. Even when its original function, whatever it may be, is no longer viable, the whole is disassembled into its constituent parts, each of which is carefully stored, waiting for the day when it finds purpose again. Sometimes, that purpose is a fruit heist!
